Upper Lid Blepharoplasty

Drooping or sagging lids are caused by loose excess skin, a weak muscle
(ptosis), or a combination of both. These problems usually occur as a result of
the natural aging process, loss of skin elasticity, or excessive rubbing of eyes
due to allergies. However, in some cases, droopy lids can be present since birth
(congenital ptosis).

Some of the most common complaints associated with drooping or sagging upper
lids are:

  • lids feeling heavy
  • looking tired or worn down
  • one or both lids hanging down over the line of vision (covering of the pupil)
  • a decrease in side vision (peripheral vision)
  • having to raise the chin up in order to see
  • having to manually raise the upper lids to see
  • eyes feeling as if they’re closing when reading or watching television
  • difficulty in applying eye shadow
  • mascara not staying on properly
  • or just plain tired of looking at them!

Whatever the reason, Dr. Hormozi can correct these problems by performing an
upper lid blepharoplasty or ptosis repair. Dr. Hormozi’s technique for this
procedure involves measuring and removing the precise amount of excess skin and
fat and/or tightening the muscle, if needed. If an associated droopiness of the
brow is also present, this can be corrected by repositioning the brow through
the blepharoplasty incision. Dr. Hormozi closes the skin incision using a
one-stitch sewing technique to ensure a clean, smooth scar line. The scar line
is hardly visible and fades away quickly!

Depending on the severity of the drooping or sagging of the upper lids, upper
lid blepharoplasties can be covered by insurance.

Lower Lid Blepharoplasty

Puffy, baggy lower lids are caused by fat around the eyeball shifting forward
over time. This usually occurs as a result of the natural aging process,
inheritance, or excessive rubbing of the eyes.
The most common complaints associated with puffy, baggy lower lids are:

  • looking tired or worn down
  • unflattering appearance

For this problem, Dr. Hormozi performs a unique lower lid blepharoplasty, unique
because he performs the blepharoplasty using a transconjunctival approach. A
transconjunctival blepharoplasty is performed by removing the fat from the
inside of the lower lid rather than cutting through the outside skin. The
transconjunctival approach eliminates the inherent risks associated with a
through-the-skin approach. Most importantly, however, is that there are no scar
lines and recovery time is limited to the absorption of the bruising!

In most cases, the skin of the lower lid snaps back into place after the fat is
removed, just like a pregnant woman’s stomach after delivery. However,
sometimes, in some cases, excess skin needs to be removed and the lid needs to
be tightened. To do this, Dr. Hormozi performs a minimally invasive surgical
procedure at the outer corners of the lower lids. He measures and removes the
precise amount of excess skin and carefully tightens the lid. The scar line is
usually hidden at the lash line and fades away quickly. Sometimes, the cheek
muscle has sagged down and creates an undesirable fold under the lower eyelids.
In these cases the cheek area can be lifted at the time of lower lid surgery,
and give a younger look to the face.

Both the upper and lower lid blepharoplasties are relatively painless and are
performed using local anesthesia in a private out-patient setting. Normal
functions are not limited, there are no bandages placed over the eyes, and
vision is not affected. Most importantly, patients are able to return to work
and their normal activities within a few days following surgery!
