Ectropion & Entropion

Ectropion

What Is Ectropion

Ectropion is a condition that affects the lower eyelid. It causes the lower lid
to droop downward and/or turn outward.

What Causes Ectropion

The most common causes of ectropion are aging of the eyelid and stretching of
the tendons located in the lower lid and/or previous lid surgeries. This is
commonly seen in patient’s with dry eyes or tearing. Other causes of ectropion
include eyelid burns, and skin diseases, i.e., dermatitis.

What Are The Symptoms Of Ectropion

Symptoms of ectropion include dryness of the eye, excessive tearing, redness of
the eye or eyelid margin, and sensitivity to light and wind. Ectropion may also
cause corneal damage to the eye if not treated.

Treatment For Ectropion

Minimally invasive surgeries can be performed on the corners of the eyelids to
tighten the lid, eliminate the symptoms described above and restore a normal
appearance to the eyelid. In severe cases of ectropion, reconstructive
procedures may be needed to restore proper lid positioning, function and
appearance.

Entropion

What Is Entropion

Entropion is a condition that usually affects the lower lids, but can
occasionally affect the upper lids as well. It causes the eyelid to turn inward
causing the lid and eyelashes to rub against the eyeball.

What Causes Entropion

The same as ectropion, the most common cause of entropion is aging of the
eyelid. However, in this condition, the lid stability is compromised causing the
lid to turn inward. Other causes of entropion include infection and scarring
inside the eyelid.

What Are The Symptoms Of Entropion

Symptoms of entropion include a foreign body sensation in the eye, tearing,
redness of the eye or eyelid margin and sensitivity to light and wind. Entropion
may also cause corneal erosion and/or corneal ulcers of the eye if not treated.

Treatment Of Entropion

Similarly to ectropion repair, minimally invasive surgeries can be performed to
reposition the lid properly.

All of the surgical procedures utilized, to correct both ectropion and entropion
problems, are out-patient procedures performed under local anesthesia.
